That's such a conundrum; if I help, will it adversely affect me? As to your take-aways, I think they are spot on. Those types of races require speed, power and endurance. I, myself, lost that speed snap long ago. On my own I rarely push myself because I enjoy the ride so much more than the suffering. And finally, as a LHT owner, I personally would not want to undertake such a race on the LHT. While it's perfect for my own commuting and exploration, in faster conditions it would be quite a burden.
