Came across this: There's apparently a new film based on the What's the Matter with Kansas? book. Interesting...

Thomas Franks in What's the Matter With Kansas? said that what is seen as a bit of harmless family fun everywhere else is a battle for property rights in Kansas. These small-minded people apparently haven't spent much time anywhere else, as they'd learn that projects like the Katy Trail have been runaway successes. It's really shameful and makes the entire county appear as nothing more than idiotic rubes.

It's a shame, as the trail could mean so much for tourism in small towns along the route. Osawatomie, especially, would seem to have a lot to gain, both in terms of visitors and facilities for their citizens.

I don't understand Miami County's stance on this -- it just seems terribly short-sighted...

The Miami County commissioners, many who are Kansas Farm Bureau members, are actively blocking trail development between Osawatomie to the Franklin county line. There are about three families in that area who own land along the trail who oppose it. The county entered into an agreement with the trail group to replace the bridge across Indianapolis Road with a crossing. It tore the bridge down but "forgot" to carry out the crossing work.
